Blyth Library Records

Hi

Can anyone tell me what records Blyth library holds, and when its open??  I would like to visit if poss, hopefully on a Saturday?

Blyth Library opening times..
6 days a week... opens 9.30 am every day.
Closing times.. Mon Tues Thurs 7 pm.  Fri 5 pm.
Wed and Sat 12.30.

Briefly.. contents..
Censuses Microfilm 41-91 . Microfiche 1901
But mainly for Blyth and surrounding area.
Indexes for 1851 covering about 75% of NBL
Indexes C1871 for south east corner of county ( nothing north of River Blyth)

Then bits and pieces e.g . Ship owners, master mariners for various eras. ditto for coal mine owners. Marriage indexes for whole county 1813-1837.
Tynemouth Workhouse records.
Blyth area Electoral Rolls from 1927.

Lots of books with photos etc on local areas.

Other than a couple of indexes on burials in a couple of local cemeteries, there are no Church records.

No GRO BMD indexes.

Local newspapers on film.

2 Fichereaders, 2 filmreaders (one copies)

Filmreaders and one Fiche machine bookable.

I assumed you worked there - you know so much about what they've got!  But causing a noise - well it shouldn't be allowed - LOL!  You have to be deadly serious when dealing with matters such as this!

I'm looking for info on Earsdon / North Shields / Tynemouth area, and the pit villages of northumberland as a large part of my tree were miners.. I haven't had access to the 1841 - 61 census, so it may shed some light on the brick walls.  Do you know what newcastle library holds?  do they have church records??  Ive tried at the discovery museum, but they don't hold info for a lot of Northumberland, and when I tried Morpeth, I found they are closed on the only days I can possibly get there... I managed to get there once by rushing after work, but couldn't book a reader as they were all taken.

any direction you can give would be greatly appreciated!

Just had 3 hours in Newcastle Library today.

Now normally I frequent Tyne&Wear Archives ( you called it Discovery.. I'll call it Co-op warehouse LOL ) and NBL County Record Office at Morpeth, a sometimes ROs in Durham City and Middlesbrough.

But I am more and more "into" N/C library.. in that room on second floor.. the more I dig the more I find... Although this is not an exact science.. generally speaking Library does not have "modern" church records, but loads of church records, sort of , up to 1837 ( Fiches and Books)

Also censuses, but as far as I can see, mainly for Tyneside.

Also "St Cath " Indexes in  margarine containers ( or ice cream) --( which TWAS does not have)

I hear crack in there that libraries at Gateshead and South Shieds are "good" ( but I don't get kicked out, cos the staff are in another room LOL )

And what can I say about NBL RO at Morpeth, which only does Mon-Wed, and kicks everybody out when they close at lunch times ... only "Roll on 2006 and the new place at Woodhorn"

North Shields Central Library might be worth a try.

Opening hours used to be 9am - 5.30 plus 2 late nights, but closed Wed.  0191 2005424

They have Tynemouth reg District Census on film/fiche.

Good coverage of Parish Registers (dates not known).

Electoral Reg's, NDFHS Indexes, MI's, Maps, Local History.

No GRO Indexes.

Info from 1998, so may be different now.

I think newcastle library seems my best bet - Ive exhausted the majority of info in North Sheilds so think it may be time to look elsewhere.  I'll hopefully have time next weekend.
