Aha, add an "i" and there are lots of them, and nearly all in Esk!  :D  In 1903 there are:

CHAILLIE
James Mapon, store keeper
Estelle Mapon, domestic duties
Charlotte Ann, domestic duties
John Henry, grazier, "Chaillevett"
Maria, domestic duties, "Chaillevett"

French origins maybe?

French origins maybe?

Possibly however the CHAILLE and MAPON names appears in the indexes in England.

Marriages Sep 1848
CHAILLE    James Mapon    Hackney 3/156

Now we have well and truly confirmed the existence of the CHAILLE family perhaps we should turn our research to Patrick Joseph McFARLANE.  Pity the Qld BDM's didn't allow you to search without the surname and just given names and parents names.  Any thoughts of the children becoming wards of the state....any research ideas?

Cheers
Cando

Hi Dundee,
Thanks for the extra info, Could Evelyn McFarlane died in childbirth on board?
David Walker Smith was Eva McFarlane's father.
I think Ernest worked away quite a bit in their eairly years.

Regards Macca.

Hi Cando,
Was the ward of the state around in 1897?  I know of children just being taken in by neighbours or other relatives.
The Challie from around Esk I always thought were related to Ernest's wife Eva but maybe they were his relations as I was told he was with them since birth,?
   Thanks for all your help
  Macca
