Hi Jim,

I heard from another researcher, that Martin was called "Martin" because his parents were not allowed to marry in Stretton on Fosse due to the fact that while the banns were being read it became noticeable that Martins mother was pregnant. So they temporarily moved to Birmingham and got married at  "St. Martins" church and then moved back home to Stretton on Fosse. Martin was born just 3 months later. It has been suggested that he was named after the church that married his parents. I also know that it was a tradition that the first born son would take the name of the father, so maybe he used them both.

Thanks for your input Jim....

"They have their reasons other than to confuse the rest us.
On balance Ernest's father is Martin who also used the name William."

I feel sure that the above is the correct way to interpret my information on Ernest Gilson.
I have just found a son for Ernest and his wife Alice, out in India in 1907. His name, wait for it ....
is Ernest William Gilson!

Deb

Morning Deb,
I know this is an old post, but I have been looking into the Gilson/Gillson/Ghilson/Ghitlon family. I am a descendant of the Martin Gilson's daughter, Caroline, Ernest's sister. You may already know now that Family Search has an entry for Ernest's christening that gives his father's name as Martin William Gilson, mother Caroline at Nuthurst (Solihull), Warwickshire 14 September 1879.
Interesting stuff about his marriage in India.
Are we related?
Stefan
Oh! What a tangled web we perceive,
where ancestors try to hide and deceive.

Deb hasn't been active on here since 2012 so she may not see this.
You can use the personal message system assuming she still has the same email address.
