Cornhill Family Brixham
« on: Sunday 30 May 04 16:33 BST (UK) »
Searching for Cornhills from Brixham.  Also looking for husband of Rhoda Cornhill, his name was William Dunn a mariner, they married in 1846 in Brixham, he was "of age" and his father was John.  I think the Dunn's came from Clayhanger, but I can't find William anywhere.

Any ideas or help?

Hi Brenda H,

I think this is your Rhonda taken from the 1851 census.

address, Ram Alley, Totnes
Census place, Brixham,Devonshire
Pro ref HO/107/1873     Folio 278  page 17

Rhoda DUNN, wife, head, M, 24, F, Mariner's wife, born Brixham,Devonshire.

William,  son,  4,  M,  born Brixham, Devonshire
George C, son, 1, M, born Brixham, Devonshire.

From that I deduce that Willam Snr was at sea.

There are quite a lot of CORNHILLS in DEVONSHIRE that were born in Brixham.

If you care to give me some names & dates I'll check up on them for you.

Cheers
Geoff

Geoff - thanks for your note.  I know Rhoda'a parents were George and Ann and that she had siblings, one of which was Mahala who went off to America I think (via Jersey).  Not sure what happened to the others - there were quite a few of them.

Everywhere I find Rhoda, I can't find her husband, William Dunn and their Son, George Cornhill Dunn born 1850 - he is showing on the census details you gave me, but I can't find any record of his birth - he was my great-grandfather.

Thanks again - any light you can shed would be appreciated.

My branch of the Dunn family has several William's in the line, and your William may well be one of them. They were fond of keeping the names in the family so practically every family in each generation had at least one William, an Edward, an Edwin, a Charles etc., and even more if each child had children which gets quite confusing!!

The surname spelling differs in the documentation for the same people (Dun, Dunn and Dunne) and although many Dunn's are located in the Clayhanger area, there were also Dunn's in Herefordshire, Shropshire, Staffordshire, Wales and Devon.

I'm currently tracing the Edward Dunn's, the eldest of whom is possibly your William's brother or father. Haven't filled in all the gaps yet, but will be happy to post info when I do.
