1910 Census Look Up James McGonigal
« on: Tuesday 12 October 10 19:31 BST (UK) »
I am looking for any information in the 1910 census records for James Scott Irvine McGonigal born about 1885 in Wilmington, Delaware. His father, William, was born in Delaware and his mother, Jeanette, was born in Delaware. In the 1900 census he was living at 207 West 11th Street in Wilmington. In the latter months of 1910 he married a Louise. I do not know what his occupation was. I cannot find his date of death but I think it was 1913-1914. Louise then married a man by the name of Charles Horner in 1917. Any information pertaining to James S. I. McGonigal would be very much appreciated.

Thank you for confirming the family in the 1910 census records and the occupation of Ervan. I had also found the birth record for Irvine McGonigal on the FamilySearch site. My problem is that the cemetery in which James or Ervan is buried in (Riverview Cemetery in Wilmington) has his death as September 29, 1913 which is one year before baby Irvine is born. I am trying to determine if the birth record is wrong or the cemetery record.

Hi Punch

Yes, have you seen the entry for Charles Ervin/Irvine Horner - same date of birth   ??? 13 Sept 1914 Father Charles Horner  - Mother Louise Courtney

The above signature was made in my presence. Evidence submitted was child's birth record No 1087 giving place of birth and age last birthday. 21 years in April 1936
Child's birth record No 1558 same as above filed December 3 rd 1942

Regards
Sandra

Sandra,
The only thing I can come up with is that the cemetery record is wrong. When I tried to find out information about the cemetery to write them and confirm their original date of death for James I found out that they had gone bankrupt and the whole cemetery has gone to ruin. Originally Riverview told me that James was killed by a train on September 29, 1913 but maybe they were off by a year. When Louise (him mother) remarried to Charles Horner in 1917, Charles possibly adopted James and gave him his name.

Hi Punch,

Thats probably the scenerio because he was Charles Horner on the 1920 Census we found for Charles and Louise.  The originally birth cert stated Irvine as the father, the other entry for Charles was probably made if they/he had lost the originally birth cert and needed a duplicate.
All these little mysteries make it very interesting (or frustrating)  ;)
