General Cemetery Nottingham
« on: Wednesday 13 October 10 16:51 BST (UK) »
I know this is a complete long shot but I have to ask..
We have been chasing the death of Thomas Mee for aaaages. We eventually found out he died in Bradford 1920. After long searches it turned out he got sent back to Nottingham to be burried in a family grave!!

We reaaaaally need to know who else is in that grave.. Would anyone be so kind to have a look or have any other way of checking??

The details I have :-

Thomas Mee (Horton) died 2nd March 1920. Burried on 6th March 1920.
Number of grave - 19333.
Of the internment 85471 Page 31 Vol. 297.

His name is Thomas Mee but on the record it says Horton in brackets - that is his stepfathers surname.
If anyone could help I would be extremely grateful.

I have checked on the General Cemetery viewer CD but drawn a complete blank on this!

No Thomas Mee or Horton.
No grave of that number.

However, this disc shows the memorial inscriptions - maybe he doesn't have a headstone? Maybe someone would be able to help if you were to contact the cemetery?

Good luck!

Hi,

I can check for you at Nottingham Archives, but it would have to be next Friday as the rest of the week I am busy all day.

Nevertheless, I'm all too happy to look. I live a two minute walk from the cem and a 15 walk from the archives :)

Matt.

There is a cd??!! No grave of that number?? ooooh now im worried.. On the sheet I have it says 6/. 19333. Apparently the 6 is ment to mean he is the 6th person to be burried in that grave??

Oh Matt if you could do that for me you would be promoted to my favourite person in the world  ;D

Yes, the CD is available from the Notts FH society and is called "General Cemetery Memorial Inscriptions".

Apparently it covers over 20,000 records - but only of transcribed memorial inscriptions in the cemetery.

So I would guess that no headstone = no mention on the CD; it wouldn't mean that he wasn't buried there.

Oh thats brill thank you.. I am just looking at them.. thinking of investing is the pack of 3 cds for both notts and the basford cemeterys...

He must really be in there somewhere.. The official paper we have says Nottingham General Cemetery in big letters on the top of it haha.
Like you said, I wonder if he is in the family grave but his name wasnt added. But then again no grave of that number?? Hmmm.. Another mystery - this man has been a nightmare with questions the whole way through!!

I don't think the lack of the grave on the disc signifies "no grave of that number" - more likely, "no inscription to go with that grave"

There's no-one of either of those names on the Basford CD either -- again though, that shows the inscriptions and is not a complete list of the graves. Just to triple check, I looked at the PR disc and he's not at any of the listed parish churches.

I'd have thought that the gen. cemetery will have a "friends" or info office - why not contact them? They are more likely to have registers with all burials, rather than just those with surviving gravestones.

This is the email I got from my friend whos tree I am doing that all this is about-

"Had some very good news today from a lady I contacted at a Nottingham undertakers who were in business at the time granddad's coffin was shipped from Bradford to Nott.m. It was a long shot but wow, what a result. It seems there is a family grave at the General Cemetery, which is just off Canning Circus and the lady actually went to the Nott.m. Archive Dept. and found a document that also gives the grave/plot number"

That document is the one I have which gives the details I posted before.. I dont know if the family grave is Mee or Horton but I assume Mee. If he was the last one buried in there in 1920 and apparently 6 to each grave then there maybe another 5 Mee members in there?? I was just thinking that if there is that many of them in one grave then surely there would be an inscription on the headstone?? ???

There may never have been a headstone (many families were too poor to run to a memorial), or it may have fallen down or become unreadable.

If I were you, I'd contact Nottingham city council and ask them if they can help you locate the grave.

Contact Details:

Tel: 0115 9152340 or 9152341
Fax: 0115 9152345

Email: cemeteries@nottinghamcity.gov.uk

and they may be glad to hear from you!

Appeal to Trace Relatives

Anyone with information should contact the the Cemeteries Office on 0115 9152340 or email cemeteries@nottinghamcity.gov.uk
