Do you have their marriage certificate, their death certificates?  Any idea whereabouts in England they were born? I can find only one entry on FreeBMD for the whole of England 1837 to this time with an Ann Brown and a James Banks on the same page. This was registered at Newington Surrey in 1842.
Do you have a record for Joseph's birth? Any names of siblings born in England?
Ages at death would give us a start. Any additional information you have would help sort them out as they are common names.

Here they are in 1851 census HO107 piece 1561 folio 130 page 50
10 Ann's Place Bermondsey
James Banks 31 shoe currier born Bethnal Green
Ann 28 Lambeth Surrey
Ann L dau 8 Lambeth Surrey
Jane E dau 6 Southwark Surrey
Emma 4 Newington
James W 2 Newington

So looks like the marriage I found on FreeBMD is the one. Registration District Newington March 1/4 1842
Vol 4 page 271.
Buying this certificate would give you the fathers of both Ann and James and their occupations.

there is a tree on A* with info that matches yours but has a second marriage for James in Hobart to Mary Cairns 1863. is this the same person?

of so has his bap as 27/2/1802 london s/o henry Banks & Ann Rug

also only one child given = William 1851??

think it is them as 1851 census given in Bermondsey surrey has:

James Banks 31  shoe currier  b.Bethnal Green,Middlesex
Ann Banks 28                          b.Lambeth
Ann L Banks 8                         b.Town Mallins,kent
Jane E Banks 6                        b.southwark,surrey
Emma Banks 4                        b.Newington,Surrey
James W Banks 2                    b.newington,surrey

Possibly Ann in 1841
HO107/1084/38/9 Book 2
St George The Martyr Southwark
Martin Street
John Brown 41 J Sawyer
Ann 41
Caroline 21 hat trimmer
Ann 18
John 8
William 6
Arabella 2
Thomas 12 months
All born in County.
There is a big age gap between Ann 18 and John 8. I wonder if Ann is the second wife?

To be really sure you are following the correct families you need that marriage certificate unless you know their parents names from their death certificates?
