Jersey BIRTH/BAPTISM look-up COUDRAY
« on: Friday 15 October 10 16:46 BST (UK) »
John Coudray born c1856, married Emily Smith Islington, Middlesex Sep quarter 1886.
1891 & 1911 census give his place of birth as Jersey, but I am unable to find him in either England or Jersey census prior to marriage. When he died on 9 Aug 1917 both death registration and probate was in the name John Treffry Toulman Coudray, whereas on both the census entries and the marriage index he is plain John Coudray.

Hi Bill

I can see an entry in the index for St Brelades Parish births for a John Treffry Toulmin Coudray 10th Sep 1850 to 25th Nov 1866 on page 51.

There seems to be a small enclave of Coudray's running the St Aubin's Hotel in St Brelades in the 1851 census, including a John Coudray - a possible father(?) The entry in Ancestry is filed under Coudsay!

Stewart,

Sorry for the delay, I missed your reply.

The index entry is definately him, thanks.

I saw the Coudray family at the St Aubin Hotel but JTTC does not appear on a census although there is a different John on a later census.

A google search on "Treffry Toulmin" turns up an Amy Jane Treffery Toulmin 1814-95, but it is hard to work out any connection. See: http://www.toulmin.family.btinternet.co.uk/DescendentsAbrahamChard.htm

Hi Bill

I've had a look at the birth certificate.

JTTC was born at 17 3/4 hour (!!) on 25th Dec 1853 at Noirmont, St Brelade. His father was John Thomas Coudray and his mother Hannah Treffry. I've never seen a time written like that before.

Many thanks for that, Stewart.

Only expect a time, but not in such a form, if the child is a twin. Could you see whether that was the case?

Hi Bill

First of all there are no twins!

Looking at the time again, I can see that it's not 17 but 7. The script is faint and it looked like two characters rather than one. The Registrar was obviously a stickler for detail as all births around that time include the date and time of birth.
