Melvilderg
« on: Tuesday 19 October 10 23:13 BST (UK) »
Hello,

I have found Melvilderg/Melvigderg as a place of residence on a McRae birth in 1814 in Gairloch. Does anyone know where this place was? Was it the old spelling for Melvaig? These McRae's later lived at North Erradale and Aultgrishan so I guess it must be in that area. Any help greatly appreciated.

Ann

Not saying it's right but you could try looking here:

Hi Ann,

OK, it's two of us with the same problem!

I've also come across "Melvilderg" in the births of 3 children from one family (1815-1819). A 4th child, that I assume could be from the same couple, was born in 1814 and residence is given as Aultbea.

To complicate things a bit more, there are 4 more children that could be from the same couple (?) and appear as born in Tignafilin (3) and Mellon Udrigle (1).

I've searched in many maps but have never found Melvilderg.

Cheers,

Hi Ann

In Watson's "Place names of Ross and Cromarty", he lists Melvaig, and gives the Gaelic spelling as Mealabhaig.

I can't see any mention in Gairloch parish of somewhere called Melvilderg or anything similar. Could it be a mistranscription of the original Gaelic spelling above?

Hope this helps

Hi Francisco & Lynn,

Thank you very much for your help. I guess it is a corruption, as it is used several times in slightly different forms. One day we may find the answer.

Cheers,

Ann

As Lynn said in her message 2 years ago, some day we might find the answer as to where Melvilderg was located.

I finally got to see a map where Melvilderg appears. It was located on the coast to the south of South Erradale, not far from Dibaig. It looks like some records that appeared as "Melvilderg" later appeared as "Dibaig".

Melvaig and Melvilderg were different places.

Cheers,
Kiko
