Prendpain family - lookup request
« on: Thursday 21 October 10 12:52 BST (UK) »
Hi

I have followed the Barkham part of my tree back to Jersey, which has now hit a deadend.  However, whilst in Jersey John Barkham married a Jane Prendpain (her surname has also been spelt as Prempain and Prempair).

I am now looking for any information on Jane Prendpain i.e. birth, parents.

For information, below is everything I have found out/been told about the Barkham/Prendpain family:

1851 census
Mary Jane Barkham, widow, 49 born in St Helier
Jane Barkham, 22, born in Grouville
Elizabeth Barkham, 20, born in Grouville
Philip Barkham, 20, born in Grouville
Charlotte Barkham, 13, born in Grouville

1841 census (can't find John or Jane):
John Noel, 25
Isabella Prenpair, 24
Mary Ward, 75
John Noel, 3
Isabella Noel, 1
Philip Barcome, 8
Charlotte Barcome, 2
Jane Barcome, 14

John Barkham from Portsmouth married Jane Prempain from St Helier on 3.6.1823

Other children baptised were:

Jean David Barkham, 3.4.1825 (to Jean Barkham & Jeanne Prendpain)
Joseph George Barkham, 21.5.1826 (to Jean Barkham & Jeanne Prendpain)
Jean Barkham 23.8.1829 (to Jean Barkham & Jeanne Prendpain)
Peter Phillipe Barkham, 8.5.1831 (to Jean Barkham & Jeanne Prendpain)
Isabelle Barkham, 6.12.1835 (to John Barkham & Jane Prendpain)
Mary Ann Barkham, 17.12.1837 (to John Barkham & jane Prendpain)

I am assuming that the Mary Jane in the 1851 census is the same person in the marriage and baptism records.

Stewart, who kindly found out the baptism details, also mentioned that there was a Pierre Prempain mentioned in the Index to Poursuites Criminelles Register.

Thank you for any assistance.

Jo

Hi

I hate to tell you this but I'm away next week so I thought I would have a look this afternoon. I wrote all the answers (and more) on a sheet of paper and between the car and the computer I have lost it!!!

Unless someone else picks this up I will look again the week after next.

Sorry, hope you can  wait!

Hi Dizzy

Found it!!

Marie Jean Prempain was baptised 21st Feb 1802 at St Helier Parish Church. Parents were Pierre Prempain and Mary (Marie) Ward.

Pierre and Mary Ward were married at St Saviours Parish Church on 6th Apr 1707. Both were living in St Helier but Pierre was French.

They had a number of other children, some of who later died. They were all baptised in St Helier, and the parents names are consistent throughout.

Marie, baptised 17th Feb 1799, died 7th Jul 1800
John Peter, baptised 28th Dec 1797, died 28th Dec 1799
Pierre Philippe, baptised 30th Mar 1800
Philippe Daniel, baptised 20th Dec 1811
Jean Thomas, baptised 14th Sep 1814
Elizabeth, baptised 27th Dec 1805, died 9th Feb 1812
Charles Pierre, baptised 2nd Feb 1804
William, baptised 2nd Apr 1807, died 13th Jul 1808
George William, baptised 23rd Jul 1809, died 12th Oct 1814

Hi Stewart

Thank you very much for all your work (again)!

Are you able to find anything about Mary Ward's family?

Have a great holiday.

Jo

Hi Jo

First a correction. I see that I wrote Pierre and Mary Ward were married at St Saviours Parish Church on 6th Apr 1707. This of course should have been 1797 - my finger slipped!

Marie Ward was baptised at St Helier Church, along with her sister Jeanne, on 21st Aug 1771. Their parents were given as Jean Ward and Jeanne Machon.

Jean and Jeanne also had other children baptised at St Helier Church:

Jean, 4th Dec 1771.
Jean Elie, 13th Feb 1774.

John Ward and Jeanne Machon were married at St Saviours Church on 22nd Jul 1770. It was noted "John soldat sans la Cie du Capt. Terrot et Jeanne Machon vve William Frost" (John was a soldier of the corp of Captain Terrot and Jeanne was the widow of William Frost).

I can see that a Jeanne Machon married a William Frost at St Saviours Church on 13th Aug 1766.William was English but living in St Helier. However I cannot see his death between 1766 and 1770.

I think I mentioned earlier that there was reference to a Pierre Prempain in the Index to Poursuites Criminelles Register. I thought I would have a look to see what he'd been up to! The index tells me that I need to look at "Book 3" page 104 and 106. Sadly this is incorrect as there is no mention of him so we will probably never know.

Whilst I was waiting for the Criminal Register I looked at the Jersey Army lists. There is an entry for a John Ward death, 22nd Jan 1799 - buried in St Helier's burial ground - wherever that may be.

Finally the sting in the tail! I had a look at Green Street cemetery for Barkham's, Prempain's, Ward's etc and found a grave reference "Sacred to the memory of Ann Mary Prempain, widow of John Barkham, died 25th Jul 1839, aged 35". I'll let you work that one out!

Hi Stewart

Thank you for doing this.

My family definitely like to make things difficult.  I don't know what to make of the grave reference!!  :)

Hi
I have also come across the surname PRENDPAIN and all it's variations... I think it has also been PROPAIN.  I have found the majority of the information that was sent to you earlier - however I still cannot make the connection to Jane GODFRAY... though I know there was a Jane who married a PRENDPAIN... I cannot make the links.
