1851 lookup please - Packer middlesex/London
« on: Saturday 09 April 05 11:27 BST (UK) »
Hi,
I thought I'd repost this message with the family name in the title.

Could some kind person please search for a JOHN PACKER in the 1851 census. He was a BASKETMAKER, born in SANDWICH, KENT in around 1805. He would have been approx. 46 yrs at the time and probably lived in Middlesex. Maybe ST PANCRAS.

If it's not too cheeky, could you also search the 1851 census for his son MATTHEW PACKER. He was born in Middlesex. He was also a witness to the possible sighting of Jack the Ripper in Bethnal Green 1888, but his son Thomas was born in SPITALFIELDS 1853.

Cheers  Dan

Hi,
Please note that MATTHEW was transcribed as PACHER in the 1871 census.

Thanks             Dan

Thanks Ken,
That's really interesting. Especially as his 2nd wife was called Sarah, and was exactly 20 years younger than him.

Mind you, I find her listing as daughter in law baffling. Who was she married to previously, and what does the Unm stand for?

Dan

Thanks Jonathon, Sylviaann and Ken,
Here they are again in 1861, but JOHN and SARAH are married:

Name   Relationship toHead of H'hold   Condition   Sex   Age   Profession/Occupation,Disability   Where Born    View CensusImage

PACKER, John   Head   Married   M   56   Basket Maker   SandwichKent   VIEW

PACKER, Anna   Daughter   Unmarried   F   16      MaryleboneMiddlesex   VIEW
RIVDRINE, Margaret   Servant   Widow   F   60   Domestic Serv   Ireland   VIEW

No sign of Louisa, Sophia, or Ann. James and Anna must be from Sarah's earlier relationship. Were they officially adopted by John, or were they already Packers, being the offspring of Sarah's marriage to an unknown son of John packer's?

Any ideas?                  Dan

Hi,
I can't for the life of me find a marriage between a JOHN PACKER and a SARAH HUMPHRIES. Perhaps Packer is misspelt. Either that, or they lived in sin. Maybe that was the easiest thing to do since they all lived under one roof anyway.

Was this usual for the times?

Dan

Hi Dan, not all marriages have been transcribed yet, but I wouldn't be surprised if they weren't married,it did happen. Sarah, being the Dtr in law, baffled me as well, if true she would have had the same name( Packer ).
Keeps us on our toe's, Doesn't it.
