GOWENLOCKS in Canada

Can anyone help?

In 1907 John Mitchell Gowenlock b1873 (leaving wife & baby)traveled from England to Canada with his brother, Benjamin James Gowenlock b1869.

 Family were then told he died in a hotel fire in Vancouver.

Imagine my surprise when surfing the web to discover John on the 1920 cencus alive and well living in Minneapolis!

I would love to find out more about my missing Gowenlocks, but need ideas how and where to look?

While the age is of it is the only Gowenlock listed in the indexes for BC. You could join this mailing list and post a message asking if someone has time to go and copy this information for you the death registeration papers would list next of kin, birth place, etc. The information on these can be helpful but are not always accurate if the family member answering the questions does not have all the information.

There were 25 Gowenlock families in the States (North Dakota, etc.) in the 1880 US census so perhaps he was with family or the name was just a coincidence?

If you go to the following site and look for Gowenlocks you will find 3 mentions - the information is not online but if you email them they will send you copies of the articles for a small fee (about $5.00 US I think) - that might sort out if these Gowenlocks are related as well.

from this site you can search some online sources for births and deaths in Minnesota there are Gowenlocks listed under both including a John Gowenlock who died in 1931 in Hennepin County which is where I think Minneapolis is. You can order a copy of the death registration online and see what it says. It should be able to verify if this is your John Gowenlock.

From this site is a reference to an Edgar Gowenlock arriving in May 1913 in the US and going to live with or visit his brother in Rev F Gowenlock in St. Louis MO. There is also an Edgar Alfred  in 1911 who I am sure is the same man.

I came up with only 13 Gowenlocks in the whole country with listed phone numbers. Very unusual name.
