I have just bought a drawing and CE Clifford's label is on the back. It's a drawing of Ruen in France.

I have tried to attached a picture of the label but can't seem to find away.

The address is:

The St. Jame's Gallery of Art
30, Piccadilly, London W.
(Second Door from St. Jame's Hall)

Hi OliverTwist

That is interesting - since my original post, I have managed to find quite a lot of information about C E Clifford and have also bought two oil paintings with his label on the back.  He seems to have had dabbled in various fields.... picture selling and hiring, framing, photography and supplies, selling equipment to artists etc etc!

Hello there, sorry to bother you, I am from Canada, and I brought at an auction a painting of 2 Japanize ladies sweeping a floor, and on the back of the painting it shows the name of  C E Clifford.  The artist name is hard to read, and was hoping that you might have a lead for me to follow up upon.

Description:
INDISTINCTLY SIGNED "Untitled - Two Japanese Women Sweeping" 1891 - Oil on panel. Signed illegibly and dated 1891 lower right. Unframed. 14 x 10 inches. Very good condition, some handling marks noted. Gallery label verso, Clifford's Gallery of Art (Haymarket, London).

Thank you for your time.

Good morning,

Unfortunately I cannot be of any help. Any artistic genes I might have inherited from my ancestor are very feeble  :-\

I can only suggest that you take a picture of the signature and post it on RootsChat.... you never know, someone might recognise it.

Good luckf!
