1st Bn Suffolk Regiment 1905 - 1913
« on: Sunday 24 October 10 08:38 BST (UK) »
Not sure if this is quite the right place to be posting this - BUT -  can anyone direct me to a site that will tell me what the 1st Bn Suffolk Regiment was doing between 1905 - 1913.

Have a death in Egypt in 1913 of William STONE -  but would love to know what he was doing since 1905

Many thanks

i Have a book entitled:
The history of the Suffolk regiment by c c r Murphy.

unfortunately it covers 1914 -1927. on looking at the 1st Battalion, it states that:

" when the memorable year of 1914 opened the 1st battalion was stationed in Cairo, where they had arrived from Alexandria, on jan 23, 1912"

looking at the history of the suffolk regiment, the \battaions themselves were not formed until 1915 - the 1st batt being formed in Ipswich under Col. Bond.

before that the county had the Suffolk volunteers and in 1914 these were formed into the volunteer training corps (all over the country).

the best place to ask for info is the Great War Forum - lots of specialist help and although you are looking for earlier. i think they will be helpful:

my husbands gdad was in the 4th batt and an old contemptable

My grandfather Claude Osborne joined the 1st Battalion Suffolk regiment on 19 December 1905. In 1907 he was in Malta, 1911 at Mustapha Pacha Barracks in Alexandria, Egypt then Early 1914 he was in Kartoum, Sudan.

Hope this helps
John
