Ballantyne birth not on Scotlandspeople:
« on: Monday 25 October 10 00:20 BST (UK) »
Hi List,

Looking for the birth of William Ballantyne b 1836-1839 in Hawick, which doesn't appear on Scotlandspeople.gov.

He is list on his marriage certificate to Jeanette Milligan on May 28, 1858 in Dalkeith with parents listed as Robert Ballantyne and Annie Turnbull, no marriage date for them and no maiden name, so don't think they were married.

Can't find him on the 1841 Census, on the 1851 & 1861 he is with his mother and there after with his wife. On his death certificate on Aug 20 1914, there is no father listed, only his mother.

Wouldn't there be a birth certificate, legitimate or illegitimate and where do I look next?

Any help or advice appreciated.
Thank you,
Glen

He's listed as Turnbull on 1841 Census aged 6 - in Hawick.

There won't be a birth certificate as Statutory Registration did not commence unrtil 1855. Your best hope is to find  a baptism, you could check Familysearch IGI, Scotlandspeople for both OPR's (Established Church of Scotland) and CPR,s (Catholic Parish Registers). Unfortunately other non-confirmist churches are not online.
