Hi Jennifer

Thank you for all your help with this.

I would be interested in finding William prior to the 1881 census as I've failed at this so far!  :-\

I know that he married Elizabeth Pritchard in 1871 in Lambeth and his father was given as William.

Thank you for any assistance.

Jo

1871 census, New John Street, Battersea (RG10, 706, 159, 51):

Henry Foster, Head, Married, 27, Stoker, b Middlesex Kilburn
Jane Foster, Wife, Married, 25, , b Lambeth
. . . . .
Ann Sykes, mother-in-law, widow, 54, Laundress, b Lambeth
William Sykes, Brother-in-law, Unmarried, 22, Costermonger, b Lambeth
Henry Sykes, Brother-in-law, Unmarried, 19, Costermonger, b Lambeth

Don't suppose this is the REAL Bill Sykes?!  :D

Hi,

I had just found this and was checking back on the marriage. Father given as James a pointsman (could be the same as signalman?)

As William's father died when he was very young could he have not known his name?

Just found this possibility in 1851 census (HO107, 1570, 152, 29)

James Sykes, Head, Married, 40, Railway Pointman, b St Georges Middlesex
Ann Sykes, Wife, Married, 31, b Battersea Surrey
Elizabeth Sykes, Daughter, 13, b Kennington, Surrey
Emma Sykes, Daughter, 8, Scholar, b Battersea Surrey
Eliza Jane Sykes, Daughter, 4, Scholar, b Battersea Surrey
William Sykes, Daughter, 1, b Lambeth Surrey

I have checked the original - it definitely says "Do" under sex!!

Hi both

Thank you.

William as his father's name came from a record on Family Search so it is possible that it was transcribed incorrectly.

I guess I'll discount it and go with James.

As I'm typing this I see KGarrad has found a possibility!

Thank you again.

I am following the birthplace of Lambeth as my clue.

There is another William Sykes in London, of about the same age (well, OK! At least one other!).
But he seems to have been around Southwark, and his parents were James & Jane.
