Wool washer in 1861 Census
« on: Wednesday 27 October 10 03:24 BST (UK) »
Hi, Not sure if this might be better in the Census section but thought I would try here.
One of my ancestors worked in a woollen mill in Bradford.
In the 1861 census his profession is given as "Wool Washer ....."
I'd like to know what the 'Wo' means after wool washer
Armstrong: West Yorkshire, Brierley Hill
Dyson: Bolton
Farrar/Farrer: Bradford
Gartland: Co. Armagh
Green: Kippax (Yorks)
Hart: Armagh City
Webster: Hartwell (Northants)

It looks like an annotation made after the census was originally taken - probably when doing up the statistics.

The annotation will be by the clerk in the census office extracting occupations. All occupations were listed  under standard headings, and in this case Wo will be Industrial Class V, Order 11, Sub-Order 1, Wool and Worsted, covering all the people engaged in that industry.
