Some Irish surnames are interchangable- such as Robertson/Robinson, Stephens/Stevenson/Stinson/Steen- so perhaps Williamson and McWilliams are the same name also.

Scottish birth certificates do list date and place of parents' marriage- but it's not uncommon for parents to add a year onto marriage date to make it look as they got married before 1st child was born or conceived.

I see you have had loads of help on this site, Christine, as usual. The folk on here are absolutely great and will leave no stone unturned.

I was particularly interested in the comment made above as I have two "missing" brothers, John and David Williamson, disappeared since 1851 when they were in Kircudbrightshire. I can now possibly search under another name. ::)

Do you mean Margaret McWilliams (Alexander's daughter) or Margaret McWilliams (Alexander's wife)? Census records (and birth record) posted earlier confirm daugter Margaret was born Isle of Man but wife Margaret listed as born Dublin in 1901 census.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Hi Sparkles

I have seen your posts on the Belfast forum and i believe that the family you are tracing is the same family as myself. My greatgreat grandfather was John Higginson who married Rachel Bradley it appears that John was the brother of William, john's father was Arthur who was tragically killed in 1897.

thanks

jim and karen

Hi,

I'm researching the Williamson/ McWilliams family as part of my family tree and was wondering if any progress has been made in finding birth or marriage records for Alexander and Margaret, as I can't find them.

Thanks,
Scott

Hi, I've done some more work on this and I think I have Alexander's birth as
17 Jul 1857 in Ardentinny, Argyll, Scotland. Does anyone else agree?

Thanks,
Scott
