pte john barnes attested on 7-6-16 and went straight into the army reserves,he was mobilised and posted to the 4h yorkshire regt on 9-8-16,then transferred to the 2/5th durham light infantry on oct 1916
he embarked with his battalion at southampton on 6-11-16 and landed at havre the following day,they re-embarked at marseilles on 10-11-16,bound for salonika as garrison troops,landed at salonika on 17-11-16

john was in a group of men who all enlisted at the same time,who came from manchester

Thanks for all this info Mack - it's more than I could have expected.
Do you know if there are any hospital records in existence? I was wondering if there was any record of the cause of my Grandfather's death. i would guess it was an illness rather than injury, but I'm interested to find out.

I think the only way you'll find out what he died from is to send for his death certificate. It will give most of the details.

I know because I've got one that says:
(1) gun shot wound to the head above left ear
(2) which caused meningitis (3 days) 
(3) irreparable head injuries.
