Hi Skippy and Carolyn thanks for your lovely restores, I really appreciate all your fabulous work on this photo.   :D ;D :-*

Thanks for confirming the date China  :D. I don't have the original photo unfortunately, my cousin in Scotland scanned this and she did it during a brief visit from the owner of the photo.

I wonder though if you could help me out with which of littlest girls is the oldest.  The darker one I originally thought might be older, but looking again at her hands they look chubbier than the fairer girl, which is often an indicator of age.  One girl is Mary Jane McGovern McComick b.1893 and the other is Catherine MGovern McCormick b.1895.

The other thing I've noticed especially since seeing the wonderful clean up jobs by everybody, is that the Mother and the tiny girl with the darker complexion, look more of a mediterranean descent, their skin is quite dark and their eyes look very dark too. The Knox family was originally from Ireland and went to Scotland, probaby about the time of the potato famine.  Does any one know anything about the ethnic mix of Ireland historically, is the colouring of these two unusual? I'm wondering if this colouring might be linked to the Romany culture but I know nothing at all about it.

Hi Jill :)

I would say the little girl sitting in the middle is the older of the two.

As for colouring, you do get a mix of colourings in the Irish and Scots as well as the English.  This Wiki article explains a bit about the various skin/hair/eye colour combinations in Ireland:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Irish

My husband's family are English and Scottish with a bit of Irish.  He and his mother are blond/e haired and blue eyed, while his father, brother and sister have black hair and dark eyes, and very swarthy skin.  The "family legend" is that they are descended from Romanies, but it must be a long way back as I've tracked them for at least 200 years with no sign of Romanies yet!  I think it's just another legacy of the wonderful mix of genetics us Anglo-Celts have inherited.

Cheers
Prue

Thnaks very much for link Prue, it is very interesting. Most of this family, especially my direct Knox line were the red haired, blue eyed colouring, this now confirms the identity of of this family.

Thanks also for picking out the older girl, I can now put their profile pictures on the family tree. Can I ask another favor please? do you think that one of these little girls could be the lady holding the baby in my other posting?

If so I will have another mystery nearly solved!
