Help finding Caroline Petford
« on: Sunday 31 October 10 12:58 GMT (UK) »
I am looking for a baptism record for Caroline Petford she was married in 1841 at Pensnett and lived much of her life on Tansey Green Road,  I believe she was the daughter of John Petford and was born sometime between 1822 and 1826 (which i know makes her only 15 when she married but she maintains a consistent age through later census up to her death).  She married Joseph Bailey  they are my 4 x great grandparents.

I believe her father John Petford was born around 1785 / 95 in Alcester variously sited as being in Warwickshire and Staffordshire (boundaries change).

In later census's Caroline states that she was born in Sedgley and Brierley Hill, I have found no record of her in the 1841 census but suspect that the enumerators recorded her as Caterine Petford aged 19 however its an unprovable point unless i find baptismal records for Caroline and her sisters that tie in with that particular census entry.

Any help would be appreciated

Hello,

does the occupation of her father on her marriage certificate fit with the occupation in 1841?
Who witnessed the wedding?

Yes the occupation of the father John Petford is lited as Miner on the marriage certifcate and the John Petford I identified in the census was also a miner.

The wittnesses to the marriage were Robert Chelton probably the brother of Elizabeth Chelton who married Caroline's brother on the same day and Mary Cooper.

The double wedding was going to be my next question  :D

I have Caroline born Dudley in the 51,61 and 71, with an birth year 1821-1823 - is that the right one?
I see her in 1881 with the later year of birth now.

If it is then Dudley fits with the Caterine Petford of 1841.

Sorry- it's not much help with your query except for agreeing that you probably have the right Caroline.

regards

That's exactly what i have found - the baptisms of Caroline and her brother elude me and i would very much like to tie up this loose end in a very interesting branch of the family

Hello again,

when I first saw the double marriage I thought it may be father and daughter getting married  :-\
Is John definitely her brother?
I was just looking at a John Petford with wife Elizabeth who gives Sedgley at some point but he is already married in 1841 and is entered as Pettifoot.

I am just telling you this in case there are (well we know there are) variations in spellings!

No you are right it is father and daughter in a double wedding Elizabeth Chelton who married John was a widow her maiden name was Price and she was baptised in december 1795

So it seems much more likely that her father remarried

Yes- I juist found that the other one is in same place in 1841 so he is presumably the brother and born c 1813 which would make more sense! :D
