Johnston family, Wigtown
« on: Tuesday 02 November 10 01:32 GMT (UK) »
Looking for information on John Shaw Johnston believed to be born in Wigtown about 1849.  His parents James & Helen Johnston.  John immigrated to New Zealand in 1874 and married my g-grandmother, Annie Fanning from Tipperary, Ireland in Balclutha NZ 1889.  We know the family history from 1874 to present but would be interested in anything before that.  I know its a long shot, but I thought I's give it a go.

Hi johnstonville

There is one possible John Johnston although I can't easily see a reference to the Shaw middle name for him:

From census entries:

1851:

James Johnston 23, agr. lab., b. Dumfries, Dumfries
Helen Johnston 22 b. Parton, Kirkcudbright
John Johnston 7 Months b. Kells, Kirkcudbright
John Coates 33, lodger
Maryann Coates 28, lodger

Address: Little Barskcoch, Kells, Kirkcudbrightshire

1861:

James Johnstone 39, labourer b. Dumfries
Helen Johnstone28 b. Parton
John Johnstone 10 b. Kells
Jane Johnstone8
Mary Johnstone 6
James Johnstone 3
Annie Johnstone 4 Mnths

Address: Bladnoch Village, Wigtown

From IGI at www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_search.asp?PAGE=igi/search_IGI.asp&clear_form=true, these look to be some of the children's births to James Johnston and Helen Rutherford:

1. JEANNIE JOHNSTONE Christening: 24 MAR 1853 Parton, Kirkcudbright
2. MARY JOHNSTON Birth: 21 MAY 1855 Wigtown, Wigtown
3. DAVID JOHNSTON Birth: 09 MAR 1857 Wigtown, Wigtown
4. JAMES JOHNSTONE Birth: 14 SEP 1858 Wigtown, Wigtown
5. ANNIE RUTHERFORD JOHNSTONE Birth: 18 NOV 1860 Wigtown, Wigtown
6. ELIZABETH JOHNSTON Birth: 13 APR 1863 Wigtown, Wigtown
7. WILLIAM BRYDSON JOHNSTON 09 JUN 1865 Wigtown, Wigtown
8. ROBERT RUTHERFORD JOHNSTONBirth: 15 MAR 1869 Wigtown, Wigtown

Worth checking on www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk, the official pay to view site for BMD, census and old parish register images, for John's birth or christening.

There is an entry for a John Shaw Johns* on Scotlands People. You can't tell until you look whether it is for a birth or christening but parents do show as James and Helen Rutherford, which is great together with the census info for this family  :)

Not sure how your John's entry has been indexed on SP for the surname. I get as far as Johns* for the surname and can't get the entry if I put in an 'n' at the end - hopefully all will be clear if  you decide to view it. The * is the wildcard for spelling variations.

The entry shows in Kells Kircudbrightshire in 1850.

John shows at home in 1871:

James Johnston 44, labourer
Helen Johnston 37
John Johnston   20, sailor b. Kells
James Johnston 12
William Johnston 5
Robert Johnston 2

Address: Bladnoch, Wigtown

Can't see him for 1881 which fits with your dates.

Hello Monica

I do hope johnstonville comes back to you promptly.

You have done so much work for him/her.

Just as you did for me in earlier days.

Thanks.

Judy

P.S. This Wigtownshire thread is always quiet so I always check who's on in case I know them! ;D

Hi Judy

Hope you are well  :)

Johnstonville got back to me via PM. Hope his searches go well.

Wigtownshire board activity goes up and down doesn't it. It's a great area for research though given the resources available.

When you are following a thread it's always interesting to follow it through to a conclusion, even though you are not directly involved.
