Does anyone know what this says..? SOLVED Thankyou all
« on: Wednesday 03 November 10 01:14 GMT (UK) »
Hello all,

1st image - given occupation on 1891 census.  This looks to me like `Local Board Casker' but if it is, what's a casker?

In the second image is the place of birth.  I know this man was born in Ashby By Partney, in Lincolnshire but I cannot fathom what this says.  Anyone?

Thanks for help.

Hi David,

Could the last word of the occupation be "Corker" or "Carter"?  I still don't know what a "Local Board [whatever]" is though!  Maybe a board corker made cork boards (pin boards) but why "local"?

Place name looks like "Perwlorum" ???

Sorry, not much help!

Cheers
Prue

Added:  well done, Carole!

Thanks Carole - spot on with the `Ashby Puerorum'.

Why do some of our ancestors seem to change their mind so often when giving their place of birth?

It could be `board corker' but Google hasn't shed any light on this.  Someone who corks boards?  ;D  The man in question has been a farm labourer all of his life up until 1891 - I don't know if this fact offers any clues.

Thanks for help.

Definitely "local board carter".  He was a carter employed by a "local board".  A google search shows many links to such people.  I'll leave it to you to google for a definition of what a "local board" is/was.

Prue - `local board' makes me think of a committee of some sort.

Yes, I see it now - I was thinking more along the lines of a Local Board-Carter, rather than a Local-Board Carter, if you see what I mean  ;D

Thanks Nick - `Local Board Carter'.  Very interesting and I hope it gives me more info about my ancestor.  A Googling I go!

Correction:  I should have said "a couple" rather than "many" examples.  Apparently "local boards" were a rather short-lived phenomenon.
