Magaret Blakelock Alnwick
« on: Thursday 04 November 10 00:04 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to find information about Thomas William Barker and Margaret Blakelock. They were married in the June quarter of 1855 Houghton le Spring. They had 5 children that I know of: Margaret Frances, Mary, John, Thomas William Alport & Amy Lydia May. Three of whom were born in Canterbury New Zealand, following their migration there in 1858.
Margaret Frances married William John Holmes Widdicombe in New Zealand and had eight children, the last of whom was born in Totnes, England.
I would dearly like to know who Thomas and Margaret's parents were; siblings etc.

Hi and welcome to Rootschat

Margaret Frances was b 1856 Sunderland

As they emigrated before the 1861 census you will need a copy of their marriage cert to establish their ages and their respective fathers names

Do you know where Thomas was born?  You say Margaret was b Alnwick - where did you get that info from

Welcome to rootschat

Do you know how old Thomas William Barker and Margaret Blakelock were?

If you have their marriage certificate could you tell us both fathers names and occupations as well as the names of the witnesses. This will help find them in the 1851 census.

They wont be in the England 1861 census as they went to New Zealand in 1858

Margaret's  father was possibly James Blakelock b. 25.4.1812 Whitburn, Durham

1851 Census - HO107  2395   530  26

In the 1851 census they have been mistranscribed as

James Blaclock 38 - gardener
Mary Blaclock 42
Thomas Blaclock 17
Margaret Blaclock 15
James Blaclock 13
Mary Blaclock 9
Henry Blaclock 6
John Blaclock 3
George Blaclock 1

He was a gardener - does that fit with the occupation on the marriage certificate? If that's correct he was the son of George Blakelock and Anne Cassells

Thomas William Barker & Margaret Blakelock were married on 16.5.1855 - she was 19.

According to another researcher online Thomas William Barker was the son of Beilby Barker, b. 1811 and Elizabeth.

It seems Thomas had a brother John Beilby Barker who married Sarah Dixon and also emigrated to New Zealand.  They had a son Beilby Barker b.1872 Little Akaloa, Canterbury, New Zealand who died 2 Nov 1941.  He married Elizabeth Ann Oldridge on 25 Aug 1897 in Le Bons Bay, Canterbury, New Zealand.

1841 Census HO107  1213   6  Bridlington, Yorkshire

Beilby Barker 30 - Collector of Taxes
Elizabeth Barker 30
Thomas Barker 11
John Barker 10

So on the marriage certificate Thomas William Barker's father should be Beilby Barker, deceased - occupation tax collector.

Good morning
I cannot tell when your enquiry about Thomas William Barker and Margaret Blakelock was sent. The year is missing. However, if it was recent, please let me know and I will give you my email address so that I can send my findings to you. TW Barker was a g-g-uncle and I am part way through tracking all the children of him and Margaret who lived in New Zealand, Fiji, Norfolk Island and even Shanghai.
Regards

I am still a bit puzzled about where Alnwick comes into this.

The year (2010) is at the top of the message:
