Registered as "male" is name later added to birth register?
« on: Thursday 04 November 10 14:07 GMT (UK) »
Hi All,We have received a birth cert' today which has
created more mystery than it solves, not unusual I know.
The person lived his life as John Owens and sometimes with
middle name Joseph, also named his son with these names.
The mystery you ask? well when I checked Irishgenealogy.ie
for his baptism I found a child baptised with the name Stephen!
same address, same parents except his mother sometimes called
Dina or Christina on baptism certs for the family was listed as Dina
on this one although the birth cert shows Bridget Connolly.
I now have the problem of reviewing all of the records
for his entire family because I now suspect I may have 2 family groups with
same parents and childrens name plus their mother has the same maiden name
which is why I'd like to know if the first name for a child would be entered later in
the birth register or somewhere other than on the baptism cert.

if the civil cert has male then it just means that they had not decided on a name by then, and may only have picked the final name by the time of baptism.

I dont believe the original details are ever updated, so the birth stays registered as just 'male' on the index, and register

Thanks Shane, so no easy way to sort this,I'm convinced that
this is the correct birth at last for this grandfather. He did have
an adult baptism also because he converted from CofI to Roman
Catholic in 1908 before his 1909 marriage to my grandmother Mary
who had the maiden name Mooney.Wonder if as was the custom then
that the Godparent brought the child to be baptised and gave him the
name Stephen by mistake and as his mother could not read or write he may
have only discovered it when he was old enough to marry.far too much detail
to put here but I have his army papers and marriage cert plus his children's births
and his death cert'.all with the name John plus 1901 and 1911 census details.
I have failed to find a Stephen with these parents on any other records so you can
see why I need the aspirin just now.
                                                                                  Thanks.Anne

I dont know the specifics.. but there might have been some way to correct entries in the register later on, but if so - this must not have been general practice otherwise we would not see the male/female births on the index and on certs..

I don't know if this helps but I have a living relative in his 30s who was named on civil records and baptised Enda ( I am not sure if there was a middle name)
His grandfather was very annoyed by his naming; as at this stage he had no grandchild named after him!!
To solve the argument "Enda" as the youngest grandchild and still unattached to his name was called Peter from then forward.
He has no reference to Peter anywhere in his records!

Hi Myluck, your Rootschat name suits me more now with all the palava
We've gone through with this family, nice story about Enda A.K.A Peter though.
You really need a sense of humour sometimes with my rellies.I think even a
professional would throw their hands in the air and throw this family tree out the window!!.

Corrrection here folks,Stephen Owens baptism
although giving his birth as the same day(2nd september 1886)as the Rotunda
born "male" Owens and same named parents, actually had the address as
49 Clarendon street on the church record.I was'nt surprised at this
as this family has a history of using the address of relatives on records or maybe
the Godparent gave their own address too.
