William Thorne Warren
« on: Thursday 04 November 10 16:20 GMT (UK) »
Hi,
My wife and her brother believe they are related to Willaim Thorne Warren of Winchester, whose became mayor of Winchester C 1901. We are trying to trace any other family in the area as we live close to Winchester and also any history of the family before and after 1901.
can anybody help?

Thanks

Hi & welcome to RootsChat.

I'll give you the standard advice for this type of question - which is to work back from what you know. In this case it would be to start with as far back as is certain in your wife's Warren family (eg parents or grandparents) and trace their birth and marriage and census entries. Doing this can enable you to go further back & see if there is a tie up.

William Thorn Warren appears as name once on the GRO birth index in the right time frame - birth registered Winchester in the September quarter of 1839. He looks to appear on the 1841 census in Winchester (as William) with several other children - the adults are Nathaniel and Mary (1841 does not state relationships). In 1851 the parents are Nathaniel and Mary Ann and William T is one of several children.

If you need help searching post what you can about the family (excluding details of anyone still alive) and someone may be able to help.

A quick check of 1881 census shows that William married Agnes.  He is shown as a Printer, Bookseller and Stationer.  Four children listed Marion 7, Clara 6, Harold 4 and Frank 2.

Living at 85 High Street, Winchester.

;D In regard to the above, my Great Great Grandfather was Nathaniel Short Warren who married Mary Ann Furner at Nursling, Hampshire. He fathered my Great Grandfather Alfred Fredrick Warren [heir] in 1830. Alfred gave up his rights [perhaps though a disagreement with his father which is common in my family] and sailed to New Zealand where he became Government Printer for that country. He died in 1911 at Christchurch but left behind a son and two living daughters.  What I know of William Thorne Warren is that he was named Thorne after a minister friend of his father [William Thorne]. A son of William [the Mayor]Warren went on to marry into the Peerage. I would be interested in knowing more about your family if we are indeed related.
