McNEILLY , PATRICK Sergeant 1522944 Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve
« on: Saturday 06 November 10 12:18 GMT (UK) »
Hallo.

I wonder if someone could find anything out or point me in the right direction as to the circumstances of my Uncle Patrick's death.  I remember my Dad who was also in the RAF saying Patrick was at RAF Aldergrove in N.Ireland and that he took off and never came back.... that may have been his way of explaining it to a youngster or he may not have known all the facts.  Any help or guidance much appreciated.
Thanks very much
Tioman

Tioman,
                He was on board 1674 Conversion Unit Liberator KG896, which took off from Aldergrove for a low altitude radar exercise, while returning to the airfield the aircraft flew into high ground at Yornagrough, approx 6 miles West of Belfast. All 10 crew on board were killed.
Alan.

oh thank you.... don't know quite what to say... the only Uncle I never knew. On maternal side had 4 uncles who all fought in WW1 and the stories I heard were mind boggling and all 4 survived despite 2 x 'blightys' and 1 POW. Patricks 4 brothers all survived WW2 (inc Dad) and if anything, improved their lot over a life down the Lanarkshire coal mines... god bless you Uncle Patrick.

Tioman

this may seem an odd note but i beleive Patrick McNeilly was my Great Uncle, and i found your post when searching for ww2 records of my family. My grandfather was James McNeilly, brother of Patrick, and i was told  the smae stories of 'Uncle Pats' activities in ww2.

I found this on another website whilst searching ;

http://www.ww2talk.com/forum/all-anniversaries/22664-memoriam-those-air-force-pilots-crews-who-died-day-ww2-17.html

this gives the details of the flight and other airmen involved and the note of a Memorial window in Eglantine church.

if possible i would like to know as much information about the McNeilly family's involvement in ww2, including my grandfather James (Jim) who passed away just before i was born, if you have any other informationit would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

@tioman

Long time no speak, when clearing my inbox I remember this thread from years and years ago, I'm resurfacing in my family history search and thought It'd be good to reconnect

I am George McNeilly, son of Jim McNeilly (junior), son of Jim McNeilly (senior) your Uncle.

Interested to find out about my grandfathers ww2 exploits, which inevitably lead to his being on Cyprus and the rest of his life there. That and information about his brothers and the wider Scots McNeilly and Logan families.

would be great to connect - happy to converse over email if that's easier. My father Jim turns 61 in a month or so, and has been reconnecting with cousin's back in Scotland and would be keen on hearing from others.

Best
George
