Indian (Northern Army) - COMPLETED FOR NOW
« on: Saturday 06 November 10 15:51 GMT (UK) »
My Grandfather (Born 1877 - Died 1943) served in the Ordnance Department of the above Army as a Warrant Officer in 1910 - he left shortly after, with as I understand a pension.
He married in Rawl Pindi in 1901 and lost a Son in 1903.
Can any one point me in the direction of where I might try and piece together his movements both before 1901 and after 1913.  How after being born in Malmsbury, Wiltshire he landed up in the Indian Army?  Your help as always is greatly appreciated ???

Difficult perhaps from France, but the records of British India are available at the British Library. St. Pancras London. As to how he finished in the Indian Army? Many British soldiers transferred to the Indian Army from British Regiments after service in India. What was his name and rank? Next time I go, hopefully later in November I'll have a look for him.

Good Morning Red,  Thank you for your offer of help (as you say it is difficult from France)
its not as though you can pop down the road.
His name was William Harry Wigmore  He seemed to use Harry mainly.
Born 6th January 1877 - Mamlesbury Wiltshire.
In the Indian Army Quarterly List for 1st January 1912
His rank given as of the 4th March 1910 was Warrent Officer
Company Ordnance Dept, Northern Army
Remarks: Allahabad -Offg, Condr.
Page #519
By December 6th  1913 (when my Mother was born) he was down as a Salesman and later on another Cert he was Army Pensioner and he died 10th November 1945.
Any thing you could find out from the above would be of great help.  Thanks again.  Anna :)

I shall be going on my own account, and for another Rootschatter. There will be no expenses, but thanks for the offer.

The 1st Battalion of the Northamptonshire Regiment left for India in October 1892. They were in Aldershot before that. They took part in the Tirah campaign (97-98) so you should look for a medal on Ancestry if you do not already have the details.
