Are Gallivan and Sullivan the same surname but mistranscribed?

Are the birth name and the baptism name usually the same?

Who is usually the witness to a marriage in 1830 to 1860's? or how is a witness chosen?

Who are sponsors for a baptism in 1830 to 1860's?   or
How are sponsors for a baptism in 1830 to 1860's chosen?

thank you for your help, Linda

I think the Gallivan surname is related to Galvin .. but not aware of any connection with the surname Sullivan.

Witnesses at marriage were entirely up to the families, but could be a parent, brother, sister, uncle, friend etc  A sponsor at a baptism is just another name for a godparent, and would often be a family member. There is a tradition, where the best man and bridesmaid from the marriage were chosen as godparents to a couple's firstborn - but I dont know how frequently this was followed.

Any suggestions for hiring a researcher to find information prior to 1864 in or around the area of Liss, Caherdaniel, district of Sneem, registrar’s district of Kenmare, Co. Kerry for Timothy Sullivan(b. 1837) and wife Bridget Griffin(Griffen) b. 1841, their parents and siblings, etc.?
