Lady Huntingdon's Zion Church, Margate
« on: Tuesday 09 November 10 12:26 GMT (UK) »
Hi

I have come across a birth & baptism in 1810 on the new beta version of Family Search which gives the above named Church.  I have also viewed the original on line via the link provided on the Family Search website which is intruiging me!

I am keen to find out any relevant information relating to this Church although I have searched these boards and found a little information posted earlier but thought I would specifically raise the matter.

Are there any monumental inscriptions published at all for this Church will I understand no longer exists as such?

Thanks in anticipation ...

Lady Huntingdon founded a Calvanist Methodist sect, also called The Countess of Huntingdon's Connexion.

So you may need to look at non-conformist records.

Hi westwood1,
My wife's great grandparents were married in the Zion Chapel, Margate in 1874 according to the Rites and Ceremonies of the Countess of Huntingdon's Connexion.
For general information google Zion Chapel, Margate where several links may of help.
I found www.margatearchitecture.blogspot.com helped me in the past.
If you google Countess of Huntingdon's Connexion you will also find several interesting links.
Hope helps,
Regards,

I have also found a record for a marriage which took place at this chapel. As far as I know the building still exists. It is now known as Union (or Union Street) Chapel and is just off Cecil Square in Margate (that is quite near the old part of the town).

I am interested in anything Margate and some years ago copied the burials records from 1803 when this Church opned up until 1860. So if you had any names I would be happy to go through my files.
The original church was demolished in 1882 when the new on was built at its rear, in Victoria Road.

I have also collected many pictures and have drawn up a map of the burial plots using the burial entries I have found.

I have a slight problem until later, all my files are in the cupboard behind the Christmas tree, but this is coming down tonight so shall look for any Spain deaths.

In the mean time, Is it Harriett Spain you found baptised there in 1810?
The details of this baptism, just for example if not Harriett........

Register of Births and Baptisms at the Zion Chapel at the Countess of Huntingdon's Denomination at Addington Square in the parish of Margate, Kent from 1802 to 1837
TNA Reference RG4 / Piece 1809 / Folio 13

Born 20th Jan 1810, Baptised 11th Feb 1810 by James Bridgman
Parents William and Susannah Spain

Some times even the Grandparents names would be listed.

Hi

Yes it was Harriet Spain I found, details as in your posting and I wondered whether she was a child of William Spain and Susannah Gifford (my 5th gt grandparents).  However, I don't see how I can prove that this is my William and Susannah grandparents unless you have any more clues.

The reason I wondered whether it was relevant is that a later set of gt grandparents actually married at the Congregational Chapel, Ashford and I did wonder where these were similar?

Have fun putting the tree away; thats a job we have to do yet!

Kind regards
