Maternity Home in Derby
« on: Saturday 13 November 10 03:31 GMT (UK) »
Would anyone know anything about a Maternity Home in Derby or how you would go about finding records from it?

I have a birth certificate for a Florence Eva Houghton born 28th November 1906 at 'The Maternity Home U D' (don't know what the 'U D' is).  The registration districe is Derby in the sub-district of Derby etc..

The mother is my elusive Constance Florence Houghton formerly Letchford (and the father is J W A Houghton of 13 Dean Street Derby), but it's really any details on 'Constance' that I'm after and I was wondering whether maternity homes kept anything that might be useful that is now available.

It might be worth checking when the Nightingale Maternity home was first established. I know it was operational in 1920 - my father was born there, as I was later.

Records - either Derby local studies libary or the Derbyshire archive at Matlock ?

Just found a reference to an article in the Derby Evening Telegraph dated 13 Sep 2009 which says that the home closed 30 years ago, ie 11 or 12 Sep 1979, after 75 years - so established 1904.

Hi

When I trained as a midwife in Derby, I worked at Queen Mary Maternity Home, Duffield Road.  Whether any notes are available, for that home or the Nightingale I don't know, but I doubt there would have been much written in them in 1906.  Probably mother's temperature and blood pressure, time of arrival at hospital, time of delivery, who the midwife was, that kind of thing.  Birth was much more natural in those days.  Now records are full of every minute incident, just so that if anything goes wrong all the info is available, whether relevant or not.  I saw things changing from when I started midwifery in 1971 until I'd finally had enough in the 1990s.

Hi,

This may only add to the mystery but I have only just started investigating my family tree and have also hit a brick-wall for the moment.
I have a marriage certificate which states the persons father as James William Arthur Houghton, his Son John Ernest Houghton married in 1928 in a Church in on Earle st. Liverpool which is not a million miles away from the area your investigating I believe?

Again this could be coincidence as haven't had much time to investigate further.
