Thomas BEACH and "Avery Scales"
« on: Sunday 14 November 10 02:00 GMT (UK) »
I am researching my Beach family of Tanworth, Solihull, Aston etc. I have very sketchy information, but found a site which gives info. on the Field family, and I have Joseph Beach who married Mary Field in 1787.
On the same Field family site it mentioned a Thomas Beach who was bought or began a scale making company, apparently his business partner Joseph Balden married Mary Avery and that began the Avery Scale Company.
I wonder if anyone closer to the action than I am (in New Zealand) can please tell me who Thomas Beach was.
In my Beach line, I have the name of Thomas several times although I am sure they are not THE Thomas Beach I am asking about. I do however wonder if he is a brother to one of my direct line which is why I am asking for the line of Thomas of the scale-making company.
My line as far as I know is:-
George Beach, died in 1727
Richard Beach, 1681 - 1732, married Eleanor Hopkins of Aston
William Beach, 1707 - 1793 of Tanworth married Elizabeth Cotterell
Joseph Beach, 1747 - 1828, married Mary Field in 1787
Thomas Beach, 1796 of Solihull, married Avice Shepherd of Alvechurch
Josiah Beach, born 1835, Yardley, he emigrated with his family to NZ.
If anyone has any knowledge of this Beach line or the lines of any of the wives, I would be so happy.

Hi Jim,
Many thanks for the site - I don't know what happened to the download - it did not seem to happen, my computer just instantly says "done" and I don't know where it has gone and if it has gone anywhere, I would love to seee the family tree.

did you tick the save box?If you did it's probably in your documents folder.Try it again but this time choose desktop. If that doesn't work send me a PM with your email address & I'll send it to you.
Have this for going on with.
According to this Thomas Beach married Rebecca Horton??
Was Avice Shepherd his 2nd. wife?
Edit: 2 different Thomas Beach's.This one married Rebecca Horton 1824.(d.1829)
Your Thomas Beach married Avice Shepherd 1823 & is listed as Ag.Lab. on the census.

Jim,
Great - it was good to see the family tree so easily, although now I am a bit confused about the Rebecca Horton and Avice Shepherd information -  the info. I have always had is that my Thomas Beach married Avice Shepherd of Alvechurch.
His parents were Joseph Beach and Mary Field, but according to this tree, the Thomas who married Rebecca Horton in 1824 in Tanworth was the son of Joseph and Mary.
If I have the wrong Thomas then I have the wrong parents. I have had a chart from another family member here in New Zealand who gives Avice Shepherd as the wife of Thomas and they married in 1823 - Avice died in 1876 so Rebecca was not a second wife.
Oh dear, where to start to sort this out, I need to somehow verify that the parents of my Thomas were actually Joseph Beach and Mary Field. Being in New Zealand it is very expensive to send for certificates, it is easier to contact those in the know.
Any ideas anyone, how to get this sorted out.

Which family member are you certain is yours without referring to anyone else's tree, that's your starting point. If it's "your Thomas" then he was an ag.lab. & not a member of the wealthy Beach family. If it's Thomas son of Joseph Beach & Mary Field then he is.

OK.I've had a look around & someone has made an assumption. The 2 Beach families have a number of similarities, both sets of parents are called Joseph & Mary, both Thomas' had a brother Joseph b.1790 & both families lived in the same part of the County.
The differences are the parents of your Thomas had just these 2 sons whereas the other Jos. & Mary had 4.also the Joseph b.1790 to Jos. & Mary Field died in 1833 whereas the Joseph brother to your Thomas was still alive in 1871.
There is only 1 marriage on IGI for a Joseph Beach to Mary & that's the one married to Mary Field (m.1787 which is the right timeframe) which is where the assumption has been made, the compiler believing as there is only 1 it must be yours.

I think I may have found them:
marriage:Joseph Beech = Mary Mortiboys/25/9/1791/Hampton - in - Arden.
Thomas Beach lived his life in Shirley Heath & was probably born there or should I say here as this is where I am.The playing fields of Shirley Heath school are over the road from where I'm sitting.
His parents could easily have married in H in A as it's just a few miles away.
One of my ancestors ran the local pub in Shirley,Thomas was probably one of his customers.
There are 2 Marys' in the area, one born 1764 Lapworth, the other 1768 Berkswell...actually there's another born 1764 H in A but this is an LDS member submit so not taken from the PR's.
Another geography lesson,Shirley,Lapworth & H in A form a triangle with about 4mls. between each one,Berkswell is off at a tangent from H in A again about 4mls.away.
According to IGI & the NBI H in A holds the largest contingent of Mortiboys with a few in Lapworth & one in Berkswell,so I'm leaning towards the LDS member submit which is Mary Mortiboys/Ch.29/1/1764/Hampton - in - Arden/Pa.Joseph/Ma.Anne.
Edit:Managed to dig out a 1904 map from an old disc.
