English Catholics
« on: Monday 11 April 05 15:13 BST (UK) »
I read somewhere that many if not most English Catholic families are mainly of foreign ancestry - my own paternal family is Catholic. I was wondering if this was true and, if so, where they all Irish and Italian?

This is not strictly true XPhile - many English Catholics vehemently resisted the 'new' religion which came with the reformation, and carried on practising the 'old' faith (mostly in secret).  The North West of England was and still is a particularly strong Catholic area.

It seems to be quite Catholic around here. The Anglican church nearby is only c100 yrs old, but the Catholic one (which looks a lot like a black Big Ben) is about 500 years old.

Mobo is correct with regards to the reformation etc. My family are Protestants, but further back were Catholic but even further again were said to be Huguenot refugees (who were Protestants).

Over time your families religious denomination may have changed many times
