Need help with a name in a Will *COMPLETE*
« on: Thursday 18 November 10 00:47 GMT (UK) »
I need help deciphering the this surname from a Will. She was living with my many-times great grand-father when he died. Her brother was his servant, and my ancestor left quite a lot to her and her sons(but not, I notice, her brother). I, nor anyone else in my family can't work out the surname. Any ideas?
Elizabeth...what?

If anyone can help I'd be so grateful, I've been trying to work this one out for months. Literally ::)

Looks like Crocome or Crotome to me. If you look for them on Google, the first appears to be a surname and the second a place name.

Crocome could be a very strong possibility. A quick google brings up a Crocome family from Bath who owned sugar plantations in St Vincent and the Grenadines. My ancestor James Choppin, whose Will this is from, was living in Bath Somerset, in his old age, having come to Britain from St Vincent and the Grenadines, where our family owned Sugar plantations also.

So I'd say, this is most likely, thank you, thank you! I'll leave this post open for a little longer, to see if there are any other suggestions, but it's looking like you hit it for me:)

And just to add: This IS the family: In the Will I have, James wished for Joseph Crocome(as I'm sure the name is) to be brought up a surgeon. The Joseph Crocome I have found was a surgeon, who completely coincidentally settled in New Zealand, which is where my family ended up, and where I am writing from!

The link I found:

I am so happy to have this one sorted. I've been trying to work this out for months. I've even had various family members have a shot, and finally throught..."well, I'll try rootschat, maybe someone there can figure it out"...and you did :)

You guys, and especially Roger in Sussex, rock!

Hello
Joseph Crocome is my 5 times great grandfather.  I cannot seem to get clarity on his parents. Some say it is James Choppin and others a James Crocome.  Did you manage to clarify if he was the son of your ancestor?  I havent been able to find a birth certificate.
