1841 Census address lookup
« on: Monday 11 April 05 18:05 BST (UK) »
Could anyone look at 16 Victory Row Stepney/Mile End Old Town in 1841 census.

I'm looking for a Gower family, Benjamin and Eliza and anyone else.

Thanks
Sylviaann

Hello Sylvia Ann
I can't find this address on the 1841 street index.  Any other clues as to its whereabouts?

How did I know it would't be there!!  ???

The birth certificate just says 16 Victory Row Stepney.  The sub-district is the Lower Districts of Mile End old Town.

The 1861 reference is RG 09 Piece 297 folio 99 page 7.
According to my booklet this translates to Piece 711-714 in 1841.  Too many to lookup I suspect.

Never mind I have some old maps and will carefully search them to see if I can find it.

Perhaps I'll ask someone with 1861 to find a nearby Street.

Thanks anyway.

Victory Row may be near Trafalgar Square, Mile End Old Town which is off White Horse Lane

Guess what?  Trafalgar Square is not indexed either.  :( There is a White Horse Street and Terrace but not Lane.
Will have another look around tonight when I have a bit of time.

Am struggling with this. Have looked at the Motco map to try to get my bearings but it looks to me as though the whole area was redeveloped: I can find very few streets in the 1841 street index.
I will try to look at the 1851 street index tomorrow as this may indicate what Victoria Row was called previously - this method helped me locate the address for one of my families.

Hello Barbara

It's not in Bethnal green Street Index in 1851.  Think it was more Shoreditch.

White Horse Lane is still there.  Trafalgar Square is now called Trafalgar Gardens.  It is actually just above St Dunstans church so could come in the Stepney area.

Anyway not to worry.  I'm sure I can manage without it.  I was just curios to see what children there were and whether any grandparents were with them.

Don't worry about it.  Thanks anyway

Hi Sylvia Ann and Ken

The more the merrier on this one. ???
I had a look at my 1851 index and all the streets I want to look for on the 1841 census are there, with no references to previous names.
This all began to look rather peculiar so I had a very close look at the street index for the 1841 and am fairly certain that the street index for Mile End Old Town is missing.  The Stepney street index refers to a separate index for the sub districts of Mile End Old Town but I can't find one and there are very few references to HO 107 713.
I will check with someone else who has this census to ensure I am not going completely mad ::) and post again.
