However, I'm still not certain it is 'my' Maud.

If she had married - she would not be sailing as Hattersley

The passenger list shows her as "Miss"

Her address on departure was Manchester

Her birthyear is correct and freebmd shows her as the only Maud Hattersley b Lancashire

I think you are seeing problems that are not there.  Perhaps a copy of her death cert could throw some light on it

There is a free 1901 index on the following link.  You can discount the entry for Maud M Carter aged 31 - no birthplace shown - husband was William and she was nee Dollings

Proof positive that it is the right Maud

www.ellisisland.org has 2 entries listed  plus full manifest entry

She arrived 26.9.1921 and theentry shows her birthplace as Manchester and her next of kin as brother William Hattersley of 44 Oakhill St Cheetham

Her employer was Mr J L Kandel of 405 West 118th St NY

There is also an arrival on 9.8.1920 of Maud M Hattersley - same employer

The website is free but you need to register to view the full manifests

Carole,

I'm very, very grateful. I agree totally that it did look like my Maud, my only worry was she might have been the one who married in Cheshire and the Maud who was travelling one who had moved up from London. However, your further post seems to have it completely cut and dried and I'll register on to the site mentioned. Also thanks for the Cheshire site mentioned earlier. I hadn't come across it before and am sure it will be useful with other relatives as well.

Now, I'll see if this information jogs anything in the minds of my father and the rest of his generation. And then see if I can find out anything about Mr J L Kandel.

Thanks again
Brie

The 1901 has a couple of Kandel families living in Manchester including an Isaac Leon.

The manifest does show J L Kandel but Isaac Leon Kandel married Jessie S Davis in 1915 at Manchester Synogogue and emigrated to the US in 1915.  The Ellis Island website does show him leaving the UK for the US on several occasions prior to and after 1915 but he arrived on 22.8.1915 with his wife Jessie Sarah Kandel

The address for the Kandel's given by Maud was 405 West 118th St NY

The address on the 1915 manifest for Isaac and Jessie was 419 West 119th St NY

Might be interesting to post a 1920 US census lookup request on the USA board for Maud

Thanks again Carole,

I have put a request on the US board and Shelly has found the Kandel family and will post the full details later. It doesn't look from what she has put so far that Maud was there but Maud didn't arrive until August and I suspect the census was probably taken earlier in the year.

That marriage is interesting. It looks to me as if Maud was a friend of Jessie's. That would explain the description of whom she was visiting as both friend and employer. It must have been quite an excitement setting off to the US in your 50s all that time ago.

PS Just seen your new post. I'll look at that and then try and find out who Jessie was. She must have been a little younger at least than Maud.

2 Jessie Sarah Davises born between 1870 and 1900:

One in Solihull 1886, the other Eccleshall J1892.

On 1911 there is one Jessie Sarah Davis who was born 1892 and now living in Prestwich. Looks like she's the girl!

Carole

Google Isaac Leon Kandel! Then read his wikipedia entry. He was a big cheese in education. Born Romania, studied at Manchester  :), went to America.

I'm off to see if he's in my DNB.

WOW - most impressive.  Maud certainly had influential friends

Wikipedia has one bit wrong - his parents were Romanian as well as him - not English.  This is the 1901 entry for 74 Waterloo Rd North Manchester

Fanny   39 b Romania
Isaac  20 b Romania university student
William  16 b Romania commercial clerk
