Hi

Thanks for the further information.

According to the DNB Isaac's father was a velvet merchant. Would that be what the V word is on the census.

It seems he attended Manchester Grammar School and won a scholarship to Manchester University, took a first in classics and went on to have a very impressive academic career, including a stretch back at Manchester in the 40s. Jessie was a classicist and teacher and he met her at Manchester University.

Yes - the second V is written like an O and the last E like a C so it reads like veloct.  For curiosity - I checked the 1901 PRO index and they have it transcribed as Veloct Fents Dealer

I can't make out the second word in relation to velvet

Hi Carole,

Goodness knows. Velvet tents? Seems unlikely. And I can't imagine anybody being a fence in velvet  :)

The word Fent means a length of cloth - just like a bolt
