Royal Marines Reg No HELP please
« on: Friday 19 November 10 22:40 GMT (UK) »
Hi folks,

I have my grandfather William Frank LORD's service record from NA but am not quite sure of the breakdown of the numbers under his name. He enlisted in the Marines on 19 Oct 1894 in London.

If someone could decipher this for me it would help, I'm having a dim day.

He seems to have 2x records at NA
This looks like some sort of filing system its not his RM number.
RM No 77/201 wa2??  dated 16/10/41

Maybe a request or something was asked for in Oct 1941??

Hi mmm45,

Those 2 records seem to be because his d.o.b was recorded as 19 April 1876 on the 8913 one and corrected to 28 April 1876. So the one with Register Number:    7311 was the original I think.

Also one has Service with Chatham Div the other with Plymouth Div...ive seen this before on a Royal who had two records after been sent to one Division for a couple of days and subsequently transferred to another!

Fleet Air Arm museum at Yeovilton have RM records that arent available at Kew  they may be able to answer your query if you email them?

I have had a reply from FAAM and have included some of it here as it might be of interest or a help to others, and it has added another record to this list.

Thank you for your e-mail enquiry of 20 November. I have checked our RMLI database and can confirm that your grandfather, like many men of the RMLI had service in more than one RMLI Division.  He was entered into Plymouth Division after enlistment and initial training and was later transferred to Chatham Division - perhaps at his own request as he was born in  London (Battersea).  So you will need to down-load both records of service.  But his story does not stop there because in 1915 he was transferred to the Royal Naval Air Service (RNAS), still with his Chatham register number, so you will also need to download a third document covering that period of his service.

There are no such things as 'medal cards' for RN/RM personnel - these are for army only.  RMLI awards are recorded on the RM Medal Roll, which we hold.  The Museum also holds an attestation pack for your grandfather.  Please see this link for details of what this pack may contain:-   http://www.fleetairarm.com/en-GB/royal_navy_royal_marines_services_documents.aspx

I have ordered the Attestation pack from them to fill in a lot of things I wondered about.

Hi

I think you will find that the '77' refers to the RM Company he served in, the remainder of the numbers are an Admiralty filing code and relate to correspondence.
