Cerne Abbas
« on: Saturday 20 November 10 22:21 GMT (UK) »
Does anyone know where I can find records recording the inmates of the Cerne Workhouse as I would love to find out more regarding William (born 1815) and Mercy Foot who spent their later days there.

Also William was born in the Park at Cerne Abbas (parents Titus (born 17800 and Susannah). I wonder if there are any maps that can provide a clue as to where the cottages where?

Very many thanks for any help.

Mark

Hi,

The Dorset History Centre in Dorchester might be able to help you.

Have you looked at the Cerne Abbas page on the Dorset OPC site?   http://www.opcdorset.org

This site says that Titus died in 1828 although the Cerne Abbas registers say 1838:

The only other person in the Cerne Abbas registers who lives in the Park is also a woodman (Henry Amey in 1833). In 1841 he is living at Park House, which appears at the end of the C.A. entries:

...factory; Giants Hill; Black Hill; Pound House; Park House; brickyard; Willis Lane (?Wills Lane, as that's what it is now).

The factory and brickyard don't sound particulary idyllic, but these people could help you:

In particular there is a lot about the 1798 houses on this page:
