*Gravestone photographic resource*
« on: Sunday 21 November 10 02:48 GMT (UK) »
I've just discovered this site (I'm not sure if it has already been mentioned on Rootschat):

http://www.gravestonephotos.com/index.php

This is easy to use and potentially a very valuable resource and it's free!

I know a lot of you have photographs of gravestones which you may wish to contribute to the site. I believe they are also looking for volunteers to take more photographs.

This is an excellent site.  Thank you for posting.  I'm investigating while having my morning coffee.  Even if I don't find a family member, I will enjoy trying.

I personally use www.findagrave.com

Both seem to be good sites, though findagrave seems more comprehensive to me and I've placed 55 graves on there so far - mainly for Rayleigh Cemetary in Essex, which is not even mentioned as yet on Gravestone Photographs.

Good Hunting!

Find A Grave appears to have an American slant and am I right in thinking it only has 4,079 gravestones from England transcribed? That's not very many.  :-\

I must have a closer look at Find A Grave but at first glance gravestonephotos seems easier to use. It also has nearly 19,000 names so has much more coverage than FaG.

It is a world-wide resource, though yes - the slant is to America.  But this is changing and the UK side is very active! Now that I know about gravestonephotographs I shall endeavour to dual-broadcast my research on that too! :D

Having just looked into doing this - Blimey what a pain! I have to collate everything to a spreadsheet, then bundle it all up on cd/dvd/mem stick then post to Cyprus!????

I think I'll stick to find a grave lol. I can do that online. This site could be so much more useful than it is :(

and I know thats all negatives and there are probably loads of positives....but sheesh!

You should contact them and let them know that if they want contributions they should make it easier to do so.  ;)

In defence of the Gravestone Photographic Resource Website, we found by pure chance that they had a photo of my husband's g-grandmother's gravestone - a burial we had been doubtful about as it was inexplicably about 70 miles from the rest of the family (still don't know why) - the gravestone even named her husband and said where they came from. This confirmed it was the lady we were looking for!
I sent an email request late one night, the photo (excellent quality) arrived by email early next morning - all completely free.

Can't fault the organisation, for us it was a great result.
