CODRUM HOUSE MACROOM CORK
« on: Sunday 21 November 10 04:50 GMT (UK) »
Does anyone know if there were two "Codrum" houses in Macroom, Cork. A book says there was one where Col.Hutchinson was murdered and one belonging to ASHE family further west, Macroom. We have two different photos.  One in fine shape (ASHE) other derelict. The derelict one was once owned by Samuel Welpley Baldwin, well known in Cork. Does anyone know if he was related to Baldwins of Curravody/Lissarda/Bettygift  Cork?

Hi Lorraine,

I recently purchased a book from the Macroom chronicle series by Barry O' Brien.

It's called "Sweet Town of Macroom".

In issue 1  There is a two page article on Codrum House and it specifically mentions that records for the year 1875/76 indicate that Codrum House may then have been occupied by Major Frederick H. Warren of the West Cork Artillery ( probably one of your ancestors).

Local mythology always deemed the house to be linked to Macroom Castle by a tunnel.

A mention of the Baldwins and Hutchinsons also.

I will send you more info by email.

Regards
Mary

You probably have these already, but just in case anyone is hunting for the families you mention...
Thanks.  The website is mine. We are the Irish Baldwins, but book will be interesting.  Lorraine

In which case, you have [put a good site together. The book is a classic gem of how they recorded info in those days. I like that it has a much thumbed look and a bit of old sellotape ageing nicely!

Best of luck with your research.

I have a copy of the Ordnance Survey map of 1834/1842 which shows the houses in Codrum  townland.
On the East nearest the town is Codrum House.
On the West is a smaller house Codrum West and between the two and to the South is Codrum Cottage.

Its been a while since I got this but I think it was through my local library which has paid access.
I will try to photo and post here.
