Does anyone have any idea about an old dye works located in St Margarets Parish Leicester or the whereabouts of Savvy Gate Court or Lower Green Street?
My ancestors the Shreads lived in that area in the late 19th century.
Any pictures or photos of the area would be great,
Also my great great grandfather Joseph Shread was buried either in Welford Road Cemetery or
Leicester St Leonards - both are marked as his final resting place. How can that be?
Thanks
Steve

.

Parish Register Entry No’. 433.

Joseph Shread.

I would have an educated guess that the details from St: Leonard’s is in fact
A Service of thanks giving followed by interment at Welford Road.

Re:~ Lower Green Street. ……….
This was off Abbey Street opposite Mansfield Street.

Re :~ Sanvey-gate Court………
Would have been a courtyard off Sanvey-gate containing 4~6 small houses
Sanvey-gate is still there to day.

Re:~  Dye works within the Parish of St: Margaret’s

There are several Cotton Mills which will have Dye departments
but with out an actual name of the works or name of owner
So in order to have a look at Trade directories of the day…..

UPDATED... a big Bleach & Dyeworks on Bowmans Lane
which ran at the side of the canal on North-gate
Also within easy walking distance of both Lower Green Street & Sanvey-gate

Greeting’s Again Steve.

Having had a good in depth look at Census returns
I can state the Burial found is that of Joseph the father of Joseph b 1864.

I see Joseph Jnr was with his new wife ( Bridget née Dempsey). Married 1887.
at No’ 10 Lower Green Street 1890
Within the household of his in law’s the Dempsey’s

And in 1881.
At No. 12 Diamond Street ( St: Leonard’s Parish.)
With father ….Joseph and his Mother Rosanna.

On BOTH Census returns it states
Joseph was born in LIMERICK IRELAND.

Sorry I could not find ant details for William b 1860.
also could only see courts on Sanvey-gate going up to No'. 6.

Joseph Shread

Mike thanks so much for your detailed research and your updates.
Its a pity Rosanna could not be buried with her husband.
Joseph was an interesting fellow. A soldier who stated his original job was as  a framework knitter from Hinckley. Enlisted into 17th (Leics) Regiment Feb 1838.
Served 9 years in India. 21 years service attached to Royal Limerick County Militia. A musician (drummer) a role which continued through three generations.

I believe his father was also Joseph Shread from Hinckley but can't confirm it as I don't  have access to the HInckley parish records.
Any advice on these brick walls? Reading some of your replies tgo previous postings you should really write a genealogical book - or maybe you have?
Best wishes
Steve

Another request for Mike from Leicester

Would you be so kind as to look up the baptism of Sarah Busby 17 Feb 1815 in Leicester St Margarets.  I'm hoping she may be a stray from Desborough or Ashley in Northamptonshire.

Thank you

Greeting’s Colek.  & Welcome to the Leicestershire Boards

Confirmation of details. :~

1815.
St: Margaret’s Parish Church. Leicester.

Parish Baptism Register Entry No’. 860.

17th. February.

Sarah. Daughter John & Elizabeth Busby…….

I’m afraid it would not give the actual Town / Village for Sarah
It would only state which Parish they were living in at the time of the Baptism
Or if the Parish Clark was feeling helpful an actual Address.
Also it would state John's Occupation

I could not see a marriage of a John ~ Elizabeth within any of the 5 Main Parishes
Neither could I see anymore Baptisms of children to John & Elizabeth

Which would seem to go along with your thoughts that they were not of the County of Leicestershire.
