Liggett family - Ballynagreagh and Tandragee
« on: Thursday 25 November 10 10:59 GMT (UK) »
I have traced my family back to a Thomas Liggett, a protestant, in Ballynagreagh Townland and by a good piece of fortune I found his marriage cert (he married Ellen Murphy in Banbridge in 1855, interestingly in a Civil Marriage!) - hence I know the name of his father.
Thomas was born about 1814, however I cannot confirm his birth date nor can I locate anything more about his father (Samuel).
Obviously I am looking back before Civil Registrations began so I then turned to Parish Records.  Sadly CI Acton and CI Clare records have been destroyed - Ballymore Parish records do survive but I cannot clearly identify any ancestors in them.  During that part of the search I found a number of Liggetts in Tullyhugh Townland and while I feel it is possible that this is all part of a greater family  - I cannot find clear proof of a direct relationship

My question is to those that have a much greater knowledge and experience of records in Ireland - Do I now just admit that I have now reached the end of my search on this line or do I have one more - remote - possibility left?

Hi there
I have photos of some of the Liggett family from around Loughgilly or Crankey area of Co Armagh. My grandfathers family was related in some way to them but I'm not that far back yet. If you would like them sent to you let me know. These would have been from around the turn of the 20th century.

sorry for the slow reply - but your email has made me think about some other possibilities in the Loughgilly area - which I had not considered before.  But I am really not doing very well - the last group of the family where I can find hard facts, like BMD data, are the sons of Thomas Liggett.  I don't think I am going to find birth data on Thomas ( of course I could get a huge slice of good luck!) - so now I am trying to identify his siblings.  I think I have found an elder brother - however, he emigrated to Australia, but I am sure there are others in that family - so who was your grandfathers Dad?  Can we trace him back to part of the greater family??

My grandfathers family were all McCammons from Crankey but on some of the older photos that I have there are several Liggett family members. I know they are related somehow to my family but haven't figured it out yet. I will ask my mum or uncle if they know how the Liggetts were related. Of the details I have from photos & death notices the members of the Liggetts are: Robert, William, Joseph, Andrew, Richard & Adam. There is also a photo of Mary & Sadie Liggett. Have any of these names appeared in your tree (especially Adam as it wouldn't have been used much in those days). Also in one of the death notices it mentions a Mr & Mrs Martin Liggett.
Hope this is of some help and when I get some more info I will repost this. If you want any of the photos let me know and I'll PM them to you.

Hopefully it is the same Sadie Liggett - mine was born in 1900 - she died in the 60's and is buried in Scarva. I don't know if this info fits with your photograph?? Some of the others are names I know - but still not tied them in properly yet.
Yes I would love to see some of your photographs - you are obviously working hard on building a good collection.
I also haven't found a connection to the McCammon family yet either. If I find the link, I will let you know.

Hi, My name is John Liggett, I was born in Ballynagreagh and I think I may know where his (Thomas Liggett) family lived in Druminargle. His family had a carpentary and sawmill business in Druminargle beside where my mother was born. Hope this helps to start with and hopefully I can give you some more information.

what a great response, for two reasons.  Firstly, it sounds like you know a great deal of family history and you might be able to help me add/correct a few missing facts and secondly, because it is likely that we are related!
To make family history just a bit more confusing - I think I can trace 3 fathers and sons named 'Thomas Liggett'.  The most recent 'Thomas' was born in 1894 in New York - his father had emigrated along with his brother, Samuel.  Samuel stayed in New York and eventually brought up a large family. However, after a few years Thomas, his wife Ellen and young daughter & son returned to Ireland - initially he lived in Belfast and then he settled in Druminargle.
I know very little about his father other that the fact that his name was Thomas and he lived in Ballynagreagh.  But we are now back at a time where tracing BMD records is not easy.  A few months ago I decided to try and locate his brothers & sisters and I think I have a possible elder brother who emigrated to Australia.
But do you know of any other for Thomas' siblings and what corrections can you make to my 'findings' above?
