Coomber in Brighton
« on: Friday 26 November 10 09:52 GMT (UK) »
I have details of Charles Coomber and family from the 1911 census.  He was born in Brighton c1881.  He married Julia Holly Southgate.   In 1901 he is with his parents Alfred and Jane and siblings May 21, Albert 15, and Gertrude 13.   All born in Brighton. RG13 929 110 9   I have failed to trace them in earlier census.  Can anyone help?
Thanks

1891 transcribed as COOMBES - RG12; Piece: 811; Folio 49; Page 39 Brighton

===================================

Could this be them in 1881?

RG11; Piece: 1088; Folio: 61; Page: 22 Brighton: 8, Terminus Street

altho the only thing in common with 1891/1901 is Mrs C's PoB of Maresfield, and the youngest child - May.

The oldest child is an Alice born c1870/1 ....

====================================

what do you make of this family grouping?

1871 Brighton RG10; Piece: 1082; Folio: 10; Page: 13 - Terminus Street

a Jane (married) born Westfield, with a very young dau Alice - living in a Coomber household, same street as in 1881 ?

That is very interesting.  Thanks.  I will look at them in more detail later this evening.

Heck - it looks a real can of worms.  Not sure what to make of this lot.  Going to need a lot of untangling.

Alfred and Jane state that they have been married 42 years in 1911 and they have had 7 children.  6 are still living.  .  Albert Henry 25, and Ethel Gertrude 23, are lving with them.   All give place of birth as Brighton.
Alfred Coomber and Jane West are on freebmd marrying in Sep 1870 in Uckfield so that seems likely.
Where is Alfred in 1871 though?

Mort
I think I am going to go with your 1881 find as there is a death for an Eleanor age 16 in 1886 so that would fit with the one child having died in the 1911 details.  Not sure why their names have changed though and am struggling to find a birth for Henry/Alfred Coomber though there is a Henry Comber in 1852 and, more likely, an Alfred in 1850.  I see the one who is the porter in 1871 shows birthplace as Lewes.
Will have to look at earlier census.   I want to avoid buying certificates if I can.
