I've been wondering why there is a line over some words, and I believe it means that there is an abbreviation used, so my guess is for Christn Pittmn. (Ooops, I meant Christin Pittmn)

Thanks everyone, I'm very happy to go with the general consensus of Christian. I have a will from 1647 that refers to "my sister Christian" but until now I've seen no other reference to her. This identification helps to tie up one branch of the family. Unless this is a male Christian being baptised - is there anything in the wording to indicate whether the child is a boy or a girl?

OK Cristin Pittman.
But to decide if boy or girl - a tough assignmnt as I agree with Colin that the bars above indicate contraction.

To make headway we must read some of the other words, and nobody has yet listed the words they CAN read
Some of it looks like written in Church Latin, to me!

So here's to set the ball rolling and give you a big laugh!
I enter the "guess modern letters for what words are the SAME words" and * means "illegible word"and  "_"  means contracted word:-
line 1
line 2
line 3 Primo deo indoti"_"  de"_" pt"_" bapt"_" fuit * *

line 4 z   deo indoti"_" de"_" pt"_" bapt"_" fuit * *

line 5 zur deo dominie de"_" pt"_" bapt"_" fuit * *

line 6    -   deo * * de"_" pt"_" bapt"_" fuit sancti Cristin Pittman

In other words looks to me like a list of "God bless  * * each and every one"
as Tiny Tim would say

Does the line above say?

30th day of December in this parish was baptised (then the name)

presumably the same day as Christian Pittman?

I agree, 'tis a register of BIRTHS

Bapte fuit  = was (more likely will be) baptised

And try die for day instead of so frequent evocations of God.

OK, so Christin/Christian Pittman was baptised (or born) on whatever date this is in 1584. The exact date isn't critical, but, like Peter, I think the start of the line above is "30 die December" and for Christin it looks as though it could be "die idem", so the same day.

I think I'm fairly confident that this is about right, so I'll post an older entry from the same register on a new thread.

Thanks,                 Jane
