Ade family
« on: Sunday 28 November 10 21:59 GMT (UK) »
My husband's Ade family have been in Wilmington, Alfriston Rodmell, Lewes areas of East Sussex since about 1400.  Just wondering if there are any other Ade descendants out there that I have not been in contact with.  My husband's family are descended from Charles Ade who used to live at Milton Court Farm, Wilmington.
Charles, Gregory, John, Catherine and Thomas are the christian names that have been used many times in the Ade family.

Genes Reunited have over 200 'Ade' entries for Wilmington (1682-1898) 78 entries for Alfriston (1720-1816) and 8 for Rodmell (1628-1741).  There may be some amongst those that you have yet to contact.

Hello,

Does anyone recognise a John ADE, born c1832, who was transported to Australia in 1849?   He may have been the son of Maria ADE of Brightelmstone, but this is unproven.

He was "posted" to Muswellbrook in New South Wales after arrival in Australia and from that point onwards there is no trace.   My interest lies in research for a PhD as a mature student on Parkhurst Prison 1838-1864 and the reformation of juvenile offenders.

Thank you for your help

The index to the 1841 census lists a John Ade (b c1832) in the Kemp Town district of Brighton.  The same census index also lists a Maria Ade (b c 1811) in the same district.  You need someone that has access to the 1841 census itself to see if these two appear together and there is a match.

Hello Roy and Jan,

Thank you for responding and "confirming" my feelings that I had found the correct John ADE and family background in 1841.

Eight years later he is 12,000 miles away down under and  completely vanished.......despite my advertising through various on-line listings RootsWeb etc. nothing concrete, except his last sighting was at Musswellbrook north of Sydney in 1849.

For now

Tony

Looking at the records, it is possible that John may have been brought up in Brighton, but not born there.  The 1851 census for his elder siblings and IGI records suggest you should be looking at Hastings.  Only his youngest sister Lucy appears to have been born in Brighton.
William, John, Maria & Ann all look to have been baptised in the Wesleyan Methodist Chapel in Hastings as the children of William Ade and Maria nee Cox.
The IGI records John's full name as John Wesley Ade, born 10th Feb 1832, baptised Hastings 11 March 1832.

The 1840 Brighton Street directory lists
BOOT AND SHOE MAKERS. Ade William, 27 George st, an address which would seem to tie in with the 1841 census
There also numerous shoemaking apprentice indentures under that name in the National Archives Index, several mentioning Brighton & Hastings.

The National Archives also state that on 1846 Sept, ADE John, 14, labourer of Brighton was sentenced to Transportation for 7yrs. Ref: QR/918 - 1846 Sept
Perhaps the local papers for September 1846 can tell you what his crime was.

Dont know whether Maria was a widow by 1841 but a William Ade died in Marylebone in that year and then some of the children turn up in that area in 1851.
