New posts - how long?

On some forums a new post shows almost instantly.  I have not yet worked out how long it takes for one to be seen on-screen here.  Is there a process the posts have to go through?

As far as I know new posts appear just after a person clicks the 'post' button.

I have never known a post not show up instantly on good old rootschat ;D
