Hi,

Just a quick query. I have many ancestors buried in Southern Cemetary, but, one of them has a grave number/reference I haven't seen before. It is P/628a. Does anyone know what the significance of the 'a' is?

Thank you

Its possible that an additional grave was fitted in between 628 & 629.

Sometimes an object, a wall, small tree, hedge or a path is present when laying out graves &  after the original numbering sometime later on it has been removed to create additional graves in the middle of the original graves so you may find XXXa as a number, the likely way to tell would be to look at the graves either side the dates of burial should be a lot older. Its much easier to add an "a" than an odd out of sequence number & makes it simpler to locate a grave number.

There may be other reasons, but the above is the most obvious.

Regards.

Steve

Thank you for the response...your explanation sounds plausible. Hadn't thought of additional graves being added.

At some point I'll have a look at the surrounding graves.

Thanks again
