Brennan/Brannan/Brannon in Co Meath

Thank you for getting back to me.

Well at least our ancestors come from the same part of Leeds!

What I couldn't find was any census references for "your" Mary Brennan and her father Michael.  Have you managed to trace them in the 1881 or 1891 censuses?

On the 1881 census Michael and Sabina lived at No1 York Court
At the same address is:
Mary [who married William Ryan]
Elizabeth
Ellen [that should be Alice]
Thomas
Agnes Ann
Mary Ryan - Sabina's mother

On the 1891 census [it is listed as Sabina Braman]
They are still at York Court but Michael is not there - guess he must have passed away.
Mary, Alice, Thomas and Agnes Ann are still there too.
Also Mary Elizabeth [we have since discovered that she was the illegitimate daughter
of Mary.

Michael had certainly died by 1891 as "Salina Bramman" is described as a widow in the census of that year.

Do you by any chance have a copy of Michael and Selina's wedding certificate from 1861.  If so, can you tell me the name and description of his father?

Michael [he was a labourer in a flax mill] and Sabina were married in 1861 at St Patricks

His father was Thomas who is listed as a Labourer and was deceased

At the time of the marriage they were living at East Queens Street, Leeds

the witnesses were Bridget Feeney and John Curtis

Now this is interesting.

I half had the idea that William might be the younger brother of Michael.  On his marriage certificate of 1864, William's father is given as "Thomas Brannan, gardener, dec'd".  So far so good.  But as explained in my first email below, when I actually looked at the St Patrick's Parish Records his father is given as "William Brannan".  So I have a problem here.  I would like to believe the certificate but the actual records take precedence!

I really should talk to the GRO about this.

The William who was married to Mary Brannan was definitely a Ryan and was from Dublin.

Whilst looking for my grandmothers relations I found another Brannan family also living in Helen's Court

1871 Census
Thomas Brannan [57] Bricklayers Labourer
Michael Brannan [32] Cabinet Maker
Ann Brannan [17] Dress Maker

Not quite sure what prompted your first comment - I am not questioning in any way that Mary Brennan married William Ryan.

I am just trying to see if my great-grandfather's family are in anyway related to your family - it has not helped that I have been looking for the wrong parentage for William Brannan for so many years due to a mistake on his marriage certificate!
