Gravestone replacing
« on: Saturday 04 December 10 13:11 GMT (UK) »
Having recently visited my ancestors graves Iwas upset by the bad condition of them, does anyone know if it's possible to have them replaced? and who you need to get permission from? they are in a churchyard.

I did notice some had been replaced but only when a latter buriel had taken place and mine are all full so no chance to replace that way. :'(

Feel it's a shame that the inscriptions will be lost for future generations

Thanks Elizabeth

You need the permission of the incumbent.  You need to fill in a form giving details of the proposed memorial, and this has to be signed by him/her.  The memorial would have to satisfy the diocesan regulations - you can probably find these online on the diocesan website.

Unless the church is now defunct there must be an incumbent,  it means the present Minister or parish Priest. ;D

Do you mean the Vicar is dead?  If the church does not have an incumbent at the moment, then contact the churchwardens who will be responsible for such matters.  What is the name of the church?  R.

Someone will have responsibility for the church and churchyard.  If it's a CofE church, try http://www.achurchnearyou.com or the diocesan website.
